Chia is a new popular superfood that is currently be grown in Uganda, especially in Northern Uganda districts of Gulu and Lira. In Africa, Uganda is the main player in chia production. Kenya, South-Africa and Tanzania produce smaller amounts. Estimated production in Uganda is up to 4,000 tonnes. Kenya likely comes in second with a reported tonnage of 630 tonnes only. Uganda has a competitive advantage for growing chia. Uganda has fertile soils and the chia seeds are grown by rural small scale farmers who produce very clean and organic chia seeds that are highly sought after by international buyers in Europe where demand for chia seeds is very high.
Uganda is ramping up growing and production of chia seeds with more farmers taking up production supported by a number of NGOs and contract farming enterprises. Uganda is gearing up to developing a bigger local market for chia seeds. We assist farmers with export of their chia seeds to buyers in Europe.
