Uses of sorghum in Uganda.
Most sorghum in Uganda is consumed locally at household level or sold as grain for export and to local breweries for beer making. Sorghum is the 3rd most important food cereal in Uganda after maize and millet. Sorghum is a critical food security cereal crop with a greater percentage of it stored in unthreshed granaries for use as food during periods of food scarcity. The sorghum is also used as an ingredient in making livestock feeds while the stover is used for forage and mulching. The forage may be fed by itself or mixed with brewer’s mash. Sorghum mash is a good laxative feed for lactating cows leading to increased milk production in cattle.
When sorghum is stored as grain, it is usually placed in drums or gunny bags and then palletised in aerated stores for safe keeping both for export or use as food during periods of less plenty.
