Bee farming or bee keeping is increasingly becoming a profitable venture in Uganda that provides much needed income for Ugandan farmers leading to improved livelihoods while at the same time supporting biodiversity. Bee keeping and apiary contributes significantly to honey production which is a good source of income from honey sold to international buyers as well as local buyers who sell the honey in super markets in Kampala, Jinja, Entebbe as well as other big towns in Uganda. Ugandans are adopting modern apiary farming methods which improve the efficiency and sustainability of honey production and processing in Uganda. Traditional methods of beekeeping are slowly being phased out especially by commercial bee farmers.
The forest cover and diversity of Uganda’s rural farming areas provide suitable habitats for honey bees to flourish and thrive. Increasingly coffee farms and tree planters are also placing bee hives in their plantations. Shea nut, macadamia, acacia trees and eucalyptus are ideal habitats for bee keeping. This type of bee keeping produces organic honey free from pesticides, implying that meticulously located bee hives are easily occupied with ” free bees”.
The richness and diversity of Uganda’s vegetation – both natural and agricultural – provide ideal habitat for honey bees. Species such as Shea nut, acacia trees, coffee and Eucalyptus are important bee plants. The bees are free from disease and productive swarmers, meaning that carefully sited bee hives are readily occupied with ‘free’ bees. Honey flows are highly localised and local knowledge underpins all successful beekeeping in Uganda.
