Common bean, scientifically known as Phaseolus vulgaris L. is an important legume staple and cash food crop in Uganda. In Uganda, beans are an affordable and reliable source of protein and nutrients mostly B vitamins, iron, calcium and zinc. Beans are highly sought after by boarding schools as a source of food for students. Beans offer a good source of balanced nutrition for rural households especially the less privileged as a required and affordable source of proteins.
Beans can be eaten as young pods, mature fresh grain or dry beans and its leaves are used to complement carbohydrate diets. Beans are an important source of income for rural farmers and they usually require very little input in terms of fertilisers. Beans revive soils by replenishing nitrogen, acting as a good option of soil regenerative farming. This enhances soil fertility and further reduces the amount of nitrogen fertilizers used in crops intercropped with beans e.g coffee and maize.
When intercropped with other crops, beans aid in reducing pests and disease prevalence, weed control as well as controlling soil erosion. A few types of beans are grown in Uganda, including pinto beans, Iron beans, buttered beans, french beans, runner beans, white beans, black beans, and kidney beans and Nambale (NABE 12, NABE 4, the common Nambale, NABE 15 to 2 and Narobean 1, 2 and 3)
