Sunflower is a commercial crop which was introduced to Uganda in the 1920s. Since then sunflower has grown to become a lucrative crop grown by farmers commercially across the country, changing the livelihoods and improving the incomes of local Ugandan sunflower farmers. Sunflower is primarily grown in the northern and eastern parts of Uganda. Sunflower is mainly grown in Lango and Acholi subregions , parts of Sironko, Mbale, Masindi and Kiryandongo districts.  Ugandan scientists have over the past few years bred sunflower varieties that are best suited for growing in Uganda including the SeSUN 1H which farmers are being encouraged to adopt because of its uniform growth both at vegetative stage and post-flowering as well as its ability not to attract flying birds.  Another popular sunflower variety grown in Uganda is sunfola which is an open pollinated variety with yield capacity of 600kgs per acre.

The cost of hybrid sunflower varieties ranges between 25,000-40,000 UGX per kg depending on supply and demand forces. Sunflower is an important food and commercial crop in Uganda especially in eastern and northern parts of the country. Sunflower is primarily grown for cooking oil production. Ugandan farmers are increasingly adopting sustainable and climate-smart agriculture as well as cutting-edge digital tools to improve sunflower yields.
