Uganda is a substantial grower and producer of mangoes. The most common mango varieties in Uganda include, Kate, Kent, Tommy Atkins, Kakule and Apple mangoes. Uganda’s fertile soils and rainy season patterns are conducive for mangoes growing, however post harvest handling and preservation limitations together with limited access to global markets still hinder growth in the mango growing industry in Uganda. A couple of fruit processing  factories have been set up to address mango preservation with solar dryers as well as processing the mangoes into mango juice. A substantial volume of mangoes is exported to Kenya where fruit processing factories are more established.

The mango is an evergreen tree that thrives well in the tropics with distinct wet and dry seasons. It is  grown for its large colourful and delicious mango fruits.  The best quality mango fruits are obtained at full maturity. Mango fruits for export are harvested as soon as the green colour of the peel begins to turn. Mangoes are best harvested by hand-picking to avoid injuring the mango fruits.  We don’t employ the local methods of harvesting mangoes which is usually throwing sticks and stones at the mango fruits. The local methods of harvesting  injure the mango fruits reducing their shelf life and export market quality potential.
