Watermelons
Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is one of the most widely cultivated crops in Uganda and East Africa. Uganda’s fertile soils and weather patterns are very favourable for watermelons farming especially in Luwero, Mpigi, Kayunga and Mukono, all located in Uganda’s central region. We purchase watermelons directly from local watermelon farmers. We highly encourage our watermelons farmers to adopt organic methods of watermelons farming, avoid using herbicides for weed management and use organic fertilisers and organic pesticides. The watermelons therefore meet the very stringent quality standards required by international buyers and the strict regulations in the destination market countries.
In Uganda, watermelon is a significant fruit and cash crop, whose derived income goes along way in alleviating poverty in households that have adopted watermelons farming.
Watermelons and pumpkins are grown in Uganda for their leaves, fruits, and seeds, thereby contributing to food, nutrition and incomes for the local Ugandan farmers.
