Onions are one of the largest fresh vegetables grown in Uganda. Onions and shallots are the most widely adaptable vegetables. Onions and shallots thrive very well in subtropical areas within the tropics. Onions and shallots adapt extremely well due to the different growth responses based on day length. Day length affects bulbing in onions. Onions are classified by skin colour and these include red, white, brown, yellow and bulb shape, round, flat or globe.
In Uganda, most onions are grown in the Sebei region, which encompasses Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo districts, as well as in Bulambuli, Mbale and Sironko. Onions and shallots are also grown in the South Western areas of Uganda, including Kabale, Kisoro, Kanungu, Rukungiri, Kasese, Kabarole and Rubirizi owing to the fertilse volcanic soils in these areas that favour onions and shallowing farming. Currently low-level onion farming is also being carried out in the areas of Mubende, Mityana, Luwero, Hoima, Masindi and Kamuli districts adding to Uganda’s volumes of Onions and shallots available for the export buyer market as well as the regional demand for onions from Rwanda, South Sudan and DRC.
