The best varieties of passion fruits grown in Uganda include the purple granadilla variety and the highly resistant Kawanda hybrid, developed locally by local Ugandan agro-researchers. The purple granadilla variety is sought after for its strong aroma . While both passion fruit varieties have high demand ready, the purple granadilla attracts higher prices than the Kawanda variety. Farming passion fruits for juice processing, requires the fruits to attain a deep-purple colour. Preference is to allow the fruits to be picked from the passion fruit vine instead of letting it fall to the ground. Research suggests that fallen fruits are lower in soluble solids, sugar content, acidity and ascorbic acid content. We recommend to our passion fruits farmers that the fruits be collected in paper boxes, not in bags which will cause sweating. When not processed instantly for fruit juice, the fruits should be spread out on drying racks to allow for excellent aeration of the fruits.
